Dramatis Personae
KUNDAN DASS, a Hakim
SHANTI, his wife.
SHAM LAL, a worker of Dev Samaj.
RAMESH, a clever person and a blackmailer
RAJ; YASH; AND BABU; friends of Ramesh.
JANKI, a widow.
SHEELA, another widow
KAMLA, a school mistress.
AMARNATH ; BAXISH SINGH; AND REHMAN KHAN, chance visitors to 'satsang'.
A BEARER
ACT I
SCENE-I
In a dimly lighted and poorly furnished room, Shanti is asleep an armchair. There is no sound except the ticking of a clock. The clock strikes tweleve. Shanti jumps from her chair with a striek. She begins to walk up and down the room, trembling from top to toe. After a minute or two there is a knock at the door.
SHANTI; Who is it?
kUNDAN DASS. It is I. [Shanti opens the door]
SHANTI. I hope you are all right.
KUDAN DASS. of course! What could happen to me? [Looking 'intently on Shanti] But you are all trembling. You are not ill. Are yOU ?
SHANTI. No. But I dreamt such a terrible thing-the same terrible thing that happened to you seven years back. KUNDAN DASS. Nonsense!
